Outbuildings, Sheds & Pole Barns in Southern Utah
Sheds, workshops, detached garages, pole barns, steel buildings. Including pole-barn-style homes for owners who want the shell now and the interior on their own timeline.
The Range We Build
Outbuildings are some of the most flexible projects we build. A 200-square-foot shed on skids can go up without a permit. A 50-foot steel building on a slab needs engineering, spot footings, and a real foundation. We do both ends of that range and everything in between.
What We Build
- Garden sheds (under 200 square feet, often permit-free)
- Workshops with electrical and HVAC roughed in
- Detached garages matched to the main home's exterior
- Pole barns with concrete foundations and spot footings
- Steel buildings for storage, equipment, or workshop use
- "She-sheds" and hobby studios
- RV covers and equipment shelters
Pole-Barn Homes (Barndominiums)
This is a growing trend in Southern Utah that most local builders' websites don't address: homeowners building a permitted pole-barn shell and then finishing the interior as a residence on their own timeline.
The approach has real advantages:
- Lower exterior cost than a traditional stick-built home
- The permitted structure protects the interior finishing work from weather
- Interior finishing can happen in phases as budget allows
- Tall ceilings give you architectural flexibility most stick-built homes can't match
We can build the permitted shell, do the full residential finishing, or do anything in between.
Pricing
Outbuilding pricing varies too widely for a useful range. A small shed on skids might be a few thousand dollars. A 20'x50' steel building can run $70,000 or more once you include foundation, slab, doors, and any rough-in for power or plumbing.
Give us a call and we'll give you an honest number based on what you actually want to build.
Foundations
- Skids: for movable sheds that don't need a permanent foundation
- Concrete pads: for permanent sheds and workshops up to about 200 square feet
- Spot footings: required for pole barns and steel buildings, with specific bolt patterns and engineered templates
- Full slab and footings: for larger buildings and any structure that will be finished into living space
The right foundation depends on the building, the soil, and what you'll be doing inside.
Permitting Thresholds
In most Southern Utah counties, sheds under 200 square feet on a movable base don't require a permit. Anything larger, anything with a concrete foundation, and anything with electrical or plumbing will usually require permits. We handle the permitting on builds that need it.
Matching the Main House
If you want the outbuilding to look like it belongs with the main house, we match exterior materials: stucco, stone veneer, tile or steel roof, paint color, trim details. If you want it to look like a working barn or pole structure, we build it that way.
Converting Outbuildings to ADUs
We're seeing more homeowners convert existing outbuildings, or build new ones, with eventual ADU use in mind. If that's the goal, the structure needs to be designed for it from the start: insulation, proper electrical and plumbing rough-in, ceiling height, and egress all need to be planned. We can build to that standard.
